Ex-Ghana coach, Chris Hughton opens up on prostate cancer battle, recovery

Former Ghana national team head coach Chris Hughton has revealed he is now cancer-free after undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, sharing his story publicly for the first time in a bid to raise awareness about early detection.

In an interview released on Friday, April 24, 2026, the 67-year-old said he was diagnosed in April 2025 and had surgery to remove his prostate the following month. One year on, Hughton says he has made a full recovery and is in good health.

Hughton credited routine medical screening for catching the illness in time. Regular monitoring of his prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels—initially flagged during his time in English football—allowed doctors to detect the condition before it progressed.

“Of course, it was difficult news,” he said. “But I was aware of the rising PSA levels, so I approached it with the mindset that it was something that needed to be dealt with.”

Medical experts emphasize that early detection significantly improves survival rates for prostate cancer, making regular screening a key preventive measure.

A central reason for Hughton’s decision to speak out is to highlight the higher risk faced by Black men, who are statistically more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer compared to other groups.

He described his experience as a “good story” and expressed hope that it would encourage more men—particularly those in high-risk categories—to prioritize regular health checks.

The former manager of Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, and several English clubs, including Brighton and Newcastle, said his health experience has shifted his priorities toward family and well-being.

Hughton reported feeling “strong” and energetic, and has remained connected to football by attending matches, though he indicated that returning to full-time management is not an immediate focus.

Since his revelation, tributes and messages of support have poured in from across the football world, including the Ghana Football Association and his former clubs.

Widely respected for his professionalism and calm demeanor, Hughton’s recovery has been welcomed as positive news within the sport.

Health advocates say high-profile figures like Hughton speaking openly about medical challenges can help reduce stigma and encourage more people to seek timely medical advice.

His message remains simple: early testing can save lives, and awareness is the first step toward prevention.
