At least 10 dead, many injured as two high-speed trains collide in Spain
The collision near Toledo, south of Madrid, has disrupted services on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed rail line as emergency teams respond to the crash.
At least 10 people have been killed and several others injured after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain on Wednesday, October 28, prompting the suspension of rail services linking Madrid with the southern region of Andalusia, regional authorities said.
The collision occurred near the towns of Urda and Los Yébenes in Toledo province, shortly before 9 a.m. local time, according to Spanish media reports and rail infrastructure operator Adif. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as rescue and assessment operations continued.
The trains involved were operated by Renfe, Spain’s state-owned rail company, and private operator Iryo. Initial reports indicated that the collision caused carriages to derail, with some reportedly falling down an embankment.
Adif announced that traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line had been suspended following the collision. The disruption affects services connecting the Spanish capital with destinations in the south of the country.
Emergency services were deployed to the scene, while nearby communities prepared facilities to receive passengers and assist those affected. Hospitals in the surrounding area were also preparing to receive casualties, according to Spanish media reports.
Castilla-La Mancha regional government spokesperson Esther Padilla said the confirmed death toll stood at 10 but was expected to increase. She said several carriages had fallen down an embankment.
The cause of the collision had not been officially established in the initial reports. Authorities and railway operators were continuing to assess the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The crash comes after another deadly railway accident in southern Spain in January 2026, when a derailment and collision near Adamuz, in Córdoba province, killed dozens of people. The earlier disaster prompted renewed debate about railway safety and infrastructure maintenance.
Further details about the number of injured passengers, the condition of those rescued and the cause of Wednesday’s collision were expected as emergency operations and investigations progressed.
