Auckland City stuns Boca juniors in CWC draw

In a result that will be etched in the history books of amateur football, Auckland City FC pulled off a monumental shock, drawing 1-1 with the legendary Boca Juniors at the FIFA Club World Cup.

The New Zealand part-timers, already out of contention in Group C, displayed incredible grit and determination to hold the Argentine giants, whose hopes of progression hinged on a victory.

However, even a win wouldn’t have been enough for Boca as Benfica simultaneously defeated Bayern Munich.

The match saw Auckland goalkeeper Nathan Garrow suffer an unlucky moment, deflecting a header into his own net to give Boca the lead.

But the resilient Kiwis fought back in the second half, with defender Christian Gray rising to head home an equalizer, sparking scenes of jubilation amongst the Auckland players and staff.

Despite Boca launching wave after wave of attacks, racking up an astonishing 40 shots, Auckland’s defense, particularly goalkeeper Garrow who made amends for his earlier error with a string of outstanding saves, held firm.

Auckland, who had endured heavy losses in their opening two matches – a 10-0 thrashing by Bayern Munich and a 6-0 defeat to Benfica – adopted a disciplined five-at-the-back formation which proved remarkably effective in stifling the Boca attack.

Speaking after the incredible result, Auckland goalscorer Christian Gray, who works as a teacher, told DAZN: “It’s been a tough trip, we’ve had some tough results but I’m just happy for the team and the boys, I think we deserve it, we got a little bit of respect back I hope. We rely on volunteers, we don’t have a lot of money, so I’m just happy that (everyone) is happy… It’s been a long four years to be honest, building up to this… (I’m) a little bit lost for words.”

Reflecting on his return to his other commitments, he added, “I’ve got a few assignments that have piled up over the last month, so that’s what I’ll be going back to, and the school holidays thankfully.”

Boca, despite controlling the majority of possession, struggled to break down Auckland’s stubborn defense.

Their star striker, 38-year-old Edinson Cavani, was kept relatively quiet throughout the match. Auckland even had the first clear chance of the game, with Regont Murati forcing a save from Agustin Marchesin.

The deadlock was broken in the 26th minute when Lautaro Di Lollo’s header from a corner bounced off the post and was inadvertently turned into his own net by Garrow.

Boca came close to extending their lead before halftime, with Carlos Palacios hitting the crossbar and Miguel Merentiel’s header striking the woodwork.

Against all odds, Auckland, the only amateur side participating in the tournament, leveled the score in the 52nd minute.

Gray expertly lost his marker and headed home powerfully from a Jerson Lagos corner, sending shockwaves through the stadium.

The game was briefly suspended due to a weather warning, the fifth such interruption at this Club World Cup.

When play resumed after approximately 50 minutes, the news of Benfica’s victory over Bayern had filtered through, confirming Boca’s elimination.

Merentiel thought he had restored Boca’s lead shortly after the restart, but his goal was disallowed for a handball in the build-up.

Garrow then produced a fantastic save to deny Malcom Braida’s header as Auckland dug deep to hold onto their precious point.

The goalkeeper was called into action again, saving well from Kevin Zanon’s long-range effort.

Despite a late barrage of shots from Boca, Garrow stood firm, including beating away a fierce drive from Palacios.

As the final whistle blew, the Auckland City players erupted in jubilant celebrations, a testament to their incredible achievement against one of the giants of world football.
