Former Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy, who was recently exonerated of all charges of rape, has agreed to a two-year deal with Lorient of Ligue 1.

The 28-year-old French football player was freed last Friday at Chester Crown Court following three hours of jury deliberation after being charged with sexually assaulting two women at his £4 million mansion.

Mendy was facing a retrial on one count of attempted rape and one count of attempted rape committed at lockdown-busting parties despite having already been exonerated of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault following a court case in January.

And just five days after being declared a free man, Mendy has already joined Lorient and is playing football once more.

The club disclosed this in a statement on its official website on Wednesday.

The statement written in French said, “FC Lorient is pleased to announce today the signing for two seasons of French international left-back Benjamin Mendy (29).

“After having satisfied the traditional medical examination, Benjamin Mendy, world champion 2018, quadruple winner of the Premier League under the colors of Manchester City, and French champion of Ligue 1 with Monaco in particular, comes to reinforce the Lorient workforce for this new season.

“The native of Longjumeau, who will wear number 5 with the Merlus, will take his first steps at Espace FCL today. Welcome, Benjamin!”
