By Ogundele Eniola
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 14 Chinese nationals and one Nigerian over alleged illegal lithium-processing activities at four plants in the Ogere area of Ogun State.
The suspects were reportedly arrested by operatives of the commission’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 following intelligence gathering and surveillance into their activities.
According to the EFCC, items recovered during the operation included bags of lithium rocks, 18 mobile phones, four laptops, two decoders, a television remote control and a trailer truck.
The commission has not disclosed the identities of the suspects or the quantity of lithium recovered from the facilities. It also did not provide further details on the alleged violations or the ownership of the four plants.
The EFCC said the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Lithium is a strategic mineral used in the production of rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles, mobile phones, laptops and other electronic devices. Its growing global demand has increased interest in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector as the country seeks to diversify its economy beyond crude oil.
However, illegal mining and unauthorised mineral processing remain concerns for regulators because of their potential implications for government revenue, environmental protection and the regulation of natural resources.
The arrests highlight ongoing enforcement efforts against suspected illegal activities in Nigeria’s mining industry. Further details about the investigation and the specific allegations against the suspects are expected as the case progresses.
The allegations against the 15 suspects have not been proven in court, and they are presumed innocent unless found guilty by a competent court.
