Edo Government clarifies Obaseki’s comments amid APC’s allegations

The Edo State Government has addressed the negative interpretation being circulated by the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), regarding comments made by Governor Godwin Obaseki at a stakeholders meeting on Sunday, July 21, 2024, in Benin City.

The government in statement signed by Edo state’s commissioner for communication and orientation, Chris Osa Neikhare reaffirmed Governor Obaseki’s comments, emphasizing that, “If a free and fair election is not allowed to hold sway in Edo State on September 21, 2024, it will trigger a major crisis in Nigeria.”

The statement referenced events from Thursday, July 18, 2024, ahead of the APC National Campaign Council rally in Benin City. On that day, a large group, purportedly organized by the APC and including individuals armed with firearms, gathered around Benin Airport on Airport Road.

This resulted in violence, leading to the unfortunate death of Inspector Akor Onuh of MOPOL 45 Abuja, significant property damage, and injuries to several citizens.

The mob’s actions extended beyond the airport, attacking other institutions such as the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Secretariat, where lawyers were targeted, including Mr. Israel Idahosa, who was severely injured and had his property destroyed.

Private citizens wearing materials associated with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, were also harassed and intimidated.

The government statement suggested that these actions indicate the APC’s plan for the September 21 governorship election: to cause chaos and make the state ungovernable, thereby manipulating the election results. It urged the APC to recognize the nation’s current hardships, including high living costs and widespread hunger, and warned that irresponsible behavior by the political class could spark a national crisis.

Given the potential for nationwide protests and a breakdown of law and order, the statement advised the APC to consider the national mood and avoid actions that could exacerbate tensions.

Edo residents were encouraged to continue their daily activities without fear, while the Nigerian Police were called upon to apprehend those responsible for the violence, many of whom have been identified in video footage.

The Edo State Government expressed readiness to assist the police with real-time video evidence captured through its robust security video surveillance system.
