Nigerian forward Sadiq Umar played a decisive role as Valencia CF moved closer to securing their top-flight status with a 2-1 victory over Girona FC in La Liga on Saturday.

The win at the Mestalla lifts Valencia to 12th place on the table, opening a five-point gap above the relegation zone with five matches remaining in the season.

After a goalless first half, Valencia took the lead early in the second period through Largie Ramazani. Sadiq doubled the advantage minutes later, finishing from close range after connecting with a cross from captain José Gayà.

Girona responded through Joel Roca in the 63rd minute, but Valencia held on under pressure to secure a crucial three points in their fight against relegation.

Speaking after the match, Valencia manager Carlos Corberán praised Sadiq’s influence since arriving on loan from Real Sociedad in January.

He said the striker’s contributions have gone beyond goals, highlighting his impact on team morale and overall performance during a critical stage of the campaign.

Sadiq’s latest strike marks his second in consecutive matches and his fifth since joining Valencia, representing a strong turnaround after limited opportunities earlier in the season at Real Sociedad.

Valencia’s recent form has improved, with three wins in their last five matches, easing fears of relegation and bringing them closer to the traditional 40-point safety mark.

With momentum building, attention is now turning to the final stretch of the season, as Valencia look to secure their La Liga status and finish the campaign strongly.
