Nigerian Army debunks rumors of clash with police over terror suspect

The Nigerian Army has vehemently denied reports circulating on social media about a violent confrontation with police officers in Benue State.

The alleged incident, which claimed soldiers attacked a police facility in Makurdi to free a detained Fulani terror suspect, has been dismissed as “false and dangerous propaganda.”

The rumor gained rapid traction online, suggesting a breakdown in cooperation between the two security forces.

However, in a press statement, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Army spokesperson, refuted the claims, asserting that they are an attempt to destabilize inter-agency relations and mislead the public.

“There was no such incident. Our relationship with the Nigeria Police remains cooperative and professional,” General Nwachukwu stated.

He further cautioned against the spread of such deliberate misinformation, emphasizing its potential to jeopardize ongoing security operations and foster mistrust among security agencies.

While the Nigerian Police Force has not yet released an official statement, local sources in Makurdi have corroborated the Army’s denial, confirming that no disturbance between the two security bodies was reported during the time the alleged incident was said to have occurred.

In the wake of the pervasive rumors, security analysts have called for a comprehensive investigation into the origin of an audio recording that fueled the false narrative.

They have also urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from disseminating unverified rumours and contents.
