NUJ Enugu honors Governor Peter Mbah with icon of democracy award

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, on Friday honored Governor Peter Mbah with the prestigious Icon of Democracy award.

The award ceremony was part of the closing activities for the 2024 Press Week organized by the Enugu State Council of NUJ.

Governor Mbah, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Lloyd Ekweremmadu, was one of four recipients of this year’s NUJ Enugu Council awards.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Sam Udekwe, Chairman of the Enugu State Council of NUJ, praised the governor for his significant contributions to the state’s development within a short time in office.

“Governor Mbah has demonstrated his commitment to changing the face of development in Enugu State by ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach the people,” Udekwe said.

“We have visited his ongoing projects, and we are proud to say that he is on the right path. This recognition is to encourage him to continue his good work.”

In his acceptance speech, Ekweremmadu thanked the NUJ for recognizing the governor’s efforts, acknowledging the award as a reflection of the press’s critical evaluation of the administration’s disruptive innovations.

“We are deeply grateful to the NUJ for this award, which comes from the watchdog and safeguard of democracy,” Ekweremmadu said.

“This recognition confirms that His Excellency is on the right path, and it will motivate him to do even more for the people of Enugu State.”

Other recipients of the award included Senator Osita Ngwu, representing Enugu West Senatorial Zone, and Professor Paul Nnamchi, the member representing Enugu East/Isi Uzo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

The weeklong Press Week event also included a church service and lectures aimed at promoting journalistic excellence and democracy.
