Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested two principal suspects in connection with the brutal murder and burning of a young woman on Saturday in the ‘Gangare’ area, near the canal behind Mile 12 Market, Lagos.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrests in a statement released on Monday.
Hundeyin stated that the victim, originally from Nasarawa State, was allegedly attacked and set ablaze in a premeditated act orchestrated by her estranged boyfriend and his accomplices. The police explicitly clarified that, contrary to widespread misinformation circulating, no act of blasphemy was involved in the incident.
“Preliminary investigations have revealed that she is from Nasarawa State and not a Yoruba woman. The prolonged dispute between her and her boyfriend, who is currently at large and had attempted to forcefully rekindle their relationship, led to the conspiracy. The boyfriend, along with other suspects, two of whom are now in custody planned and executed the attack,” he said.”
Hundeyin noted that the deceased had been living in the area with relatives from the northern part of the country, and her exact occupation remains unknown.

He further explained that preliminary investigations suggest the motive behind the heinous crime stemmed from a prolonged dispute between the victim and her estranged boyfriend, who is currently at large.
The boyfriend had reportedly attempted to forcefully rekindle their relationship, leading to the conspiracy that resulted in the attack.
The two suspects currently in custody are believed to have actively participated in planning and executing the brutal assault.
The Lagos State Police Command assured the public that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing boyfriend and any other individuals connected to the crime.
