Police probe viral video of ‘officer’ in Lagos bus altercation

The Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a man dressed in police-branded clothing allegedly driving a commercial bus and engaging in a heated confrontation with passengers in Lagos.

The incident reportedly occurred near Eko Bridge, where the driver was seen arguing with commuters after stopping the bus to purchase fuel. In the widely circulated footage, passengers accused him of issuing threats during the altercation, raising concerns over their safety and conduct on public roads.

The video quickly sparked public outrage on social media, with many users questioning the identity of the individual and the circumstances surrounding his behaviour while in possession of items resembling police insignia.

Responding to the incident, the Force Public Relations team through the New Media Officer, CSP Aliyu Giwa, confirmed that the matter is under review.

He explained that while the individual in the video appeared to be wearing clothing marked “NPF/Police,” he was not in standard police uniform and his status as a serving officer has not been confirmed.

According to him, the police are currently working to verify the identity of the man and determine whether he is connected to the Force in any official capacity.

CSP Giwa further stated that any behaviour capable of endangering or intimidating members of the public is unacceptable and would not be condoned by the police institution.

He assured that appropriate action would be taken once the investigation establishes the facts surrounding the incident.

The development has renewed concerns about the misuse of police insignia and the impersonation of security personnel, particularly in urban centres where such incidents can escalate tensions and erode public trust.

Authorities say the outcome of the investigation will determine whether any criminal or disciplinary actions will follow, as the Force continues efforts to maintain discipline and professionalism within its ranks.
