Purchasing of exalted offices of Sen. President, Speaker, dangerous to our democracy – Sen. Basiru
The senator representing Osun Central Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the National Assembly, Ajibola Basiru, on Wednesday, asserted that purchasing of exalted offices in the National Assembly which include the senate president and Speaker of the House of Representatives is dangerous to the growth of democracy in Nigeria. He said that buying of offices, in addition to vote buying opens the space for the incompetent but rich politician to use his money to pay his way into political office.
Basiru, speaking on Channels TV, Sunrise Daily, on Wednesday monitored by National Daily from Lagos, expressed that “purchasing of highly exalted office of the senate president endanger the growth of democracy in the country. It is dangerous to our democracy.”
The senator noted that vote buying was noticeable in the 2023 general elections despite efforts to eliminate the practice. He noted that buying positions in the National Assembly would not encourage the emergence of competent leaders.
