Nigeria’s Super Falcons concluded their intensive preparations for the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a commanding 3-1 victory over arch-rivals Ghana.
The friendly match, held on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at the Lanoria Sports Complex in Casablanca, served as the final litmus test for both teams ahead of the continental tournament’s kickoff on July 5 in Morocco.
Following a goalless draw against Portugal last week, the Super Falcons entered this decisive fixture in high spirits, keen to build strong momentum.
Head coach Justin Madugu fielded a formidable starting eleven, featuring key attacking talents such as Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade, alongside the energetic midfield presence of Deborah Abiodun.
In goal, Tochukwu Oluehi capably stood in for first-choice Chiamaka Nnadozie, while the defensive line was anchored by the experienced quartet of Osinachi Ohale, Tosin Demehin, Michelle Alozie, and Ashleigh Plumptre.
The initial exchanges of the match were evenly balanced, with both sides pressing hard but struggling to create clear-cut scoring opportunities. However, Nigeria eventually broke the deadlock in the 34th minute through Chinwendu Ihezuo.
Her powerful shot, which deflected off a Ghanaian defender before finding the net, was ultimately credited to Ihezuo as her initial effort was deemed on target.

Just before halftime, the Super Falcons further extended their lead after being awarded a penalty.
Star striker Asisat Oshoala confidently stepped up to the spot and converted the kick, sending Ghana’s goalkeeper Cynthia the wrong way to double Nigeria’s advantage, making it 2-0 heading into the break.
The second half saw increased action and numerous substitutions from both teams as coaches tested their squads.
Despite these changes, Nigeria maintained their dominance throughout the half, effectively controlling the tempo of the game.
While Ghana managed to pull one goal back, the Super Falcons held firm to secure a well-deserved 3-1 victory.
This commanding performance provides a significant morale boost for the Super Falcons as they prepare to compete for the WAFCON title, demonstrating their readiness and determination for the continental showpiece.
