CAF increases WAFCON prize money for Morocco 2024 tournament
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a historic increase in the prize money for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024, doubling the winner’s share to a whopping $1 million and boosting the total prize money by 45%.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made a historic move to significantly boost the financial incentives for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024, demonstrating a renewed commitment to the growth and professionalization of women’s football across the continent.
The winner of this year’s tournament, which kicks off tomorrow, July 5, 2025, will now receive a groundbreaking $1 million, marking a colossal 100% increase from the 2022 edition.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed the substantial increase, with the total prize money for the tournament now reaching over $3.4 million, up from $2.4 million previously.
This significant financial injection is expected to have a far-reaching impact on the sport.
“The confederation is continuing with its commitment to the development and growth of women’s football in Africa,” Motsepe stated.
He emphasized that “The 100 percent increase in the prize money of the winner of the tournament and the 45 percent total increase should contribute to the increase of the salaries of women football players, coaches, and employees.”
Motsepe highlighted the accelerating progress and global competitiveness of African women’s football.
“The quality and standard of women’s football in Africa is consistently improving and is world-class,” he affirmed, expressing enthusiasm for the growing interest in the tournament.
“We are excited about the substantial increase in the number of fans, broadcasting viewers, and sponsors in this tournament.”

The revised prize money distribution for participating National Teams is as follows:
- Winner: USD 1,000,000
- Runner-up: USD 500,000
- Third place: USD 350,000
- Fourth place: USD 300,000
- Quarter-finalists (4 Teams): USD 200,000 for each team
- 3rd of the group: USD 150,000
- 4th of the group (3 teams): USD 125,000 for each team
The total prize money for the competition now stands at USD 3,475,000. This bold move by CAF is set to further professionalize women’s football on the continent, encouraging greater investment and development at all levels of the game.
