Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has given a brutal and honest verdict on two stars at Old Trafford over transfer.

The former Red Devils captain has advised the duo of Harry Maguire and Mason Greenwood to leave the club.

National Daily reckons that the pair have been out of favour for differing reasons. Rooney has thus advised his both compatriots to seek new pastures away from United.

Erik ten Hag is preparing for his second season as boss at Old Trafford. The Dutchman has continued to reshape his squad with severals ins and outs.

United have already witnessed the exit of one of their former prominent stars in David de Gea after the Spaniard’s lengthy contract saga. And with Ten Hag’s latest decision to strip Maguire of the captaincy, his role can be underline as a squad player.

Manguire who has previously been a regular, has now fallen behind the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in the pecking order.

Rooney reacting to the defender’s recent treatment after he was sporadically used last term, told the Athletic that this is the latest nail in the coffin for a man he doesn’t back: “To have the armband taken off you, how does he move forward with the club? That shows the manager really doesn’t believe in him. It leaves Harry in a position where he has to think on what he does moving forward.

“The manager has shown he is not part of the plans. I’m sure Harry will want to go and play — for himself, for his England career — to put himself in the best position to be as successful as he can. The best thing now is probably for him to move.”

Maguire is not short of interested parties with Chelsea, Tottenham and clubs in Saudi Arabia all linked.

Greenwood  meanwhile is waiting to find out whether or not he will be integrated back into the picture in Manchester after the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued its case against him for attempted rape, assault and coercive control.

United are conducting their own investigation but a major PR and image disaster beckons if the club decide to welcome Greenwood back. Players from the women’s team have also made their feelings known which could leave the forward with no choice but to head elsewhere.

“It leaves Mason Greenwood in a position where he is stuck,” Rooney added. “So for Mason, it’s a bad position to be in because I’m sure he just wants to play football. But for the club, its image and ensuring they make the right decisions, it’s almost a catch 22. I think the best thing for Mason now is to get out of the club and go and develop somewhere else.

“With everything that has happened and how long the internal investigation has taken, it’s probably got to a place now where Mason just needs to go and play and to try and get his career back on track.”
