Yobe Govt, NEDC distribute farm input to 769 farmers
Yobe Government in collaboration with the North East Development Commission (NEDC), on Monday, distributed fertilisers and input to 769 women farmers in the state.
Gov. Mai Mala-Buni, stated this at the inauguration of the farm input distribution exercise in Damaturu.
Mala-Buni said that fertilisers and inputs would be distributed to women headed households affected by the insurgency to enable them to engage in farming activities.
The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs Mairo Mashi, said the gesture was to provide means of livelihood to women farmers displaced by the insurgency.
He said the beneficiaries were drawn from Gujba; Gulani, Tarmuwa, Yunusari, Geidam, Fika and Damaturu Local Government Areas of the state.
“Recently; a total of 1,780 women received goats and N10,000, to enable them to engage in livestock production under the agriculture support programme initiated by the state government,” he said.
According to bim, the agriculture support programme is designed to support farmers and increase productivity to achieve food security.
The governor commended the Commission for its interventions in the area of women, girls and child protection as well as support to the displaced persons.
In his remarks, Dr Ali Abbas, NEDC Focal Person in the state, said the gesture was to support vulnerable woman to have a means of livelihood to enable them to become self-reliant.
“We have seen many women who lost their husbands and breadwinners to the insurgency in the past one decade.
“This led to the transformation where many of them became sole breadwinners of their families and consequently venture into farming activities.
“The governor, therefore, directed us to liaise with the Ministry of Women Affairs, to get good number of women who are into real farming for support,” he said.
Abbas expressed the hope that the support would assist the beneficiaries towards improving their production output.
