Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris announced on Tuesday that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will be her running mate, choosing a progressive leader from America’s heartland to appeal to rural, white voters.

Harris shared the news in a text message to supporters, praising Walz as a “battle-tested leader” with a strong record of achievement in Minnesota.

Walz, a 60-year-old U.S. Army National Guard veteran and former teacher, expressed his excitement on social media, saying, “I’m all in.”

Walz has served as governor since 2018, advocating for a progressive agenda including free school meals, climate change initiatives, and expanded paid leave. His past as a defender of agricultural interests and gun rights during his tenure in Congress reflects his appeal to rural voters.

Harris, who became the Democratic nominee after President Joe Biden ended his re-election campaign, chose Walz over Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The Harris-Walz ticket will face Republican candidates Donald Trump and J.D. Vance in the upcoming election.

Walz’s selection adds a Midwestern politician to the ticket, aiming to win over key battleground states like Wisconsin and Michigan.

His tenure as governor was marked by the handling of the George Floyd case, where he demonstrated a commitment to justice, earning praise from civil rights leaders like Rev. Al Sharpton.

The Trump campaign quickly criticized the selection, framing Walz as a “hardcore leftist” out of touch with most Americans. However, Walz has struck a chord with young voters, and his straightforward, plain-spoken style is seen as a potential asset in attracting undecided rural voters.

With Walz on board, Harris hopes to energize her campaign and connect with a broader demographic, bringing a mix of progressive and centrist appeal to the ticket.
