The German Mission in Nigeria has warned Nigerians seeking visas to Germany against using unauthorised agents to secure appointments or sending application documents to diplomatic missions via email.

The mission issued the advisory on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, following reported confusion among applicants over the procedures for starting their visa applications.

In a statement shared on its official X account, the German Mission urged applicants to follow the prescribed procedures and use only official government platforms to begin their applications.

It advised prospective travellers to first identify the appropriate visa category based on the purpose and duration of their intended stay in Germany.

According to the mission, applicants seeking to travel for tourism, business or family visits generally require a Schengen visa for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Those intending to stay in Germany for more than 90 days for purposes such as employment, education, vocational training or family reunification are required to apply for a national visa.

The mission also urged applicants to determine whether the German Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate General in Lagos is responsible for processing their applications before proceeding.

It directed applicants to use the official online appointment booking system for their respective visa categories and comply with the instructions provided.

The German authorities specifically cautioned Nigerians against paying agents or third parties who claim to have special access to visa appointments.

“You do not need to pay an agent just to book a visa appointment. The official appointment booking is free,” the mission stated.

It also clarified that applicants should not send their documents to the German diplomatic missions by email as a means of securing appointments or submitting visa applications.

For certain long-term visa categories, applicants can begin the process through Germany’s Consular Services Portal, which allows them to submit applications and supporting documents online.

However, the online process does not eliminate the requirement for an in-person appointment, during which applicants may be required to provide biometric information, present original documents and pay the applicable visa fees.

The mission further advised applicants to select the correct visa category when booking appointments, warning that errors could result in delays or the need to secure a new appointment.

Applicants are also expected to prepare all required documents and comply with the instructions provided by the relevant diplomatic mission.

The German authorities urged Nigerians to rely on official government information and exercise caution when dealing with individuals or organisations promising to facilitate visa appointments in exchange for money.

The advisory comes amid continued demand for German visas among Nigerians seeking opportunities for tourism, education, employment and family reunification.

The German government maintains that visa appointment bookings through its official system are free, and applicants do not need to engage paid agents to access the service.
