Just in: Helicopter crashes in Port Harcourt, rescue operations underway
A helicopter carrying eight people crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Bonny Finima, off the coast of Port Harcourt, at approximately 11:22 a.m. on October 24, 2024.
The Sikorsky SK76 helicopter, registered as 5NBQG and operated by East Wind Aviation, was en route from the Port Harcourt Military Base to the NUIMANTAN oil rig when it encountered difficulties, leading to the emergency ditching into the water.
In response to the incident, a coordinated search and rescue operation has been initiated. Teams from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and the Nigerian Search and Rescue Unit have been mobilized.
Military aircraft and low-flying helicopters have been deployed to assist in the search for survivors. Unfortunately, there has been no Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) signal detected from the downed helicopter, complicating rescue efforts.

As of now, three bodies have been recovered from the crash site, but search operations continue as authorities strive to locate the remaining passengers.
In a press statement, Honourable Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo confirmed that the government is actively monitoring the situation and collaborating with relevant agencies to minimize casualties.
He expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those on board. We are committed to providing the necessary support during this difficult time.”
The cause of the helicopter crash is currently under investigation, with the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau launching a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
