Alaba Market traders urge Tinubu to fix Volkswagen-Market road

Traders and business owners at the popular Alaba International Market in Ojo, Lagos, have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the deteriorating road linking the market to the Volkswagen area.

The traders said the poor condition of the road was increasingly affecting the movement of goods and vehicles into and out of the busy commercial hub.

The appeal was made during the weekend by High Chief Dr. Camillus Nnamdi Amajuoyi, President of the Alaba International Market Association Electronics, at the unveiling of new structures within the market.

Amajuoyi said urgent government intervention had become necessary because of the enormous volume of commercial traffic using the road daily.

According to him, more than 1,000 trailer-loads of containers enter the market through the route every month, making the condition of the road a major concern for traders, transport operators and other businesses.

He appealed to the Federal Government to prioritise the rehabilitation of the road to prevent further deterioration and ensure smooth movement of goods.

Road vital to Alaba’s economy

Amajuoyi stressed that Alaba International Market plays a significant role in Nigeria’s electronics and commercial sectors, arguing that the condition of the access road should reflect the market’s economic importance.

He said improved road infrastructure would not only ease transportation but also reduce the difficulties faced by traders and customers moving goods through the area.

Also speaking at the event, Mr Effor Jaaswill Ajiri, Chief Executive Officer of Vigis International, commended the leadership of Amajuoyi, describing his administration as successful in several areas.

Ajiri described Alaba International Market as a commercial centre that accommodates people from different ethnic backgrounds without discrimination.

He said the market had provided opportunities for people from across Nigeria to pursue their businesses and improve their livelihoods.

Ajiri also commended Lagos State residents for providing what he described as a peaceful environment for businesses to thrive, referring to them as the hosts of Alaba International Market.

Trader warns of worsening situation

In a separate interview, Chief Joseph Ezenwugo Nwachimereze Na Uga, Chief Executive Officer of Blessed Joe Nigeria Electronics Ltd, also called on the government to urgently rehabilitate the road.

Nwachimereze said the continued deterioration of the route could eventually make it difficult for trailers and other vehicles to access the market.

He urged the government to act before the situation becomes more severe and begins to have a greater impact on commercial activities.

The traders said repairing the road would provide significant relief for businesses operating in Alaba and improve the movement of containers and other goods into one of Lagos’ major commercial centres.

They appealed to the Tinubu administration to treat the rehabilitation as a priority, stressing that a functional road network was essential to sustaining the market’s contribution to commerce and employment.
