The Nigerian Army has announced that troops of the 82 Division have dismantled a camp allegedly linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during an operation in Imo State.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Army disclosed that the operation was carried out on April 24, 2026, along the Ubaha–Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State. The mission followed credible intelligence reports indicating the presence of a suspected IPOB/ESN hideout in the area.
According to the statement, the operation formed part of a strategic clearance and search exercise aimed at dismantling criminal camps in the region and locating the remains of two military personnel — Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew — who were abducted and killed in May 2022 while travelling to their traditional wedding.
The Army said troops advancing toward the suspected hideout came under heavy gunfire from armed fighters. However, the soldiers reportedly responded decisively, repelled multiple ambushes and forced the attackers to retreat.
“The encounter further revealed the desperation and criminal nature of the group, which continues to target innocent citizens and security personnel alike,” the statement read.

Following the successful clearance of the camp, troops conducted an extensive search of the surrounding area. During the search, shallow graves were discovered within the camp, believed to contain the remains of the two slain personnel.
The Army stated that the graves were carefully excavated and suspected human remains were recovered. The remains have since been secured for forensic examination, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities.
It added that efforts are ongoing to liaise with the families of the deceased personnel to ensure proper identification and facilitate dignified burial arrangements in recognition of their service and sacrifice.
The Army said the operation underscores its commitment to securing justice for fallen officers and degrading criminal networks operating in the South-East. It further described the discovery of shallow graves within the camp as evidence of the group’s alleged atrocities and disregard for human life.
The military reassured residents that operations would continue until criminal elements in the region are neutralised and stability restored.
It also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
