Kano tailor begins 120-hour sewing marathon to break Guinness World Record
A Kano-based fashion designer, Abdulkadir Hassanul Basari, has embarked on a 120-hour sewing marathon in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest sewing marathon by an individual.
The five-day challenge, tagged Sew for the Nation, began on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at the sports complex of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria in Kano. It is scheduled to end on Monday, October 12.
Basari, the Chief Executive Officer of Basari Apparels and Textiles Nigeria Limited, is aiming to surpass the existing record of 106 hours, 55 minutes and 20 seconds, achieved by fellow Nigerian tailor Oluwaseun Kuforiji in January 2025. Guinness World Records lists Kuforiji as the current record holder.
Beyond the pursuit of international recognition, Basari said the initiative is intended to support education by producing school uniforms for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds in public schools.
He announced the project in a video shared on his social media platforms on October 1, describing it as an opportunity to combine a record attempt with community development.
According to Basari, the initiative seeks to demonstrate how vocational skills, creativity and determination can be used to make a positive impact on society.
He also called on members of the public to support the project, which aims to provide practical assistance to pupils who may struggle to afford school uniforms.
Although Basari is targeting 120 hours of continuous sewing, completing the challenge would not automatically make him an official record holder.
Guinness World Records must assess the evidence and confirm that the attempt complied with the applicable rules before recognising any new record.
The organisation’s published record for the longest sewing marathon currently stands at 106 hours, 55 minutes and 20 seconds.
If verified, Basari’s achievement would establish a new benchmark in the category while drawing attention to tailoring and other vocational skills as tools for entrepreneurship and community development.
The outcome of the verification process will determine whether the Kano-based designer is officially recognised as the new record holder.
