Police fire tear gas at #EndSARS anniversary gathering at Lekki toll gate [VIDEO]
By Anuoluwa Amao
Police fired tear gas at opposition politicians, activists and journalists gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos to mark the sixth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests, disrupting a memorial exercise in honour of victims of the 2020 demonstrations.
Among those at the gathering was Funsho Doherty, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate, alongside other opposition figures and activists who had assembled to lay wreaths in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the protests.
The police action plunged the gathering into confusion, forcing participants to contend with tear gas and a tense atmosphere as the commemoration was disrupted.
The incident has renewed concerns over the right to peaceful assembly and the safety of journalists covering the annual remembrance of the #EndSARS protests, which remain a significant moment in Nigeria’s history.
