Breaking: Senator Shehu Sani defects to PDP
The much rumoured defection of former Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial Zone, Sen. Shehu Sani has finally been confirmed.
National Daily sources hinted that the Senator had been nursing the idea since 2019 to defect to the PDP but had to rather move to People’s Redemption Party.
According to the source his defection had been long awaited and expected especially during the 2019 election which the party was supposed to have fielded him as their gubernatorial candidate but was disappointed when he choose to go to PRP instead.
‘We know it will not be easy for him now to get the gubernatorial ticket come 2023 but there is no harm in trying. The source said.
The former Senator who finally decamped on Thursday 16th Sept 2021 was said to have met with the 23 local government Chairmen of the PDP in state at his residence to discuss an approach towards the 2023 Elections.
It could be recalled that the former Senator had tendered his resignation from the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) with immediate effect in July 2021
Sani who joined the party in October 2018, made the announcement in a letter dated July 9 and directed to the PRP chairman in ward six, Tudun Wada, Kaduna.
I wish to formally notify you of my decision to step aside from the Peoples Redemption Party. This notice takes effect from today,” he said in the letter obtained.
Without stating reasons for his resignation and if he would immediately join another party, Mr Sani added that “I hope we shall continue to relate in the spirit of our struggle, our shared history, and our common ideological principles”.
Shehu Sani joined PRP days after he left the All Progressives Congress (APC), a platform through which he contested and won the Kaduna Central Senatorial District on 28 March 2015.
His defection to PDP is not unconnected with his ambition of becoming the gubernatorial flagbearer of the party come 2023 election.
