Committee on decongestion of correctional centres inaugurated in Oyo State
Retired Justice Eni Esan has been inaugurated as the Board Chairman of Parole on Decongestion of Correctional Centres in Oyo State.
The committee was inaugurated at the Nigerian Correctional Service, Oyo State Command, Agodi, Ibadan on Tuesday.
While inaugurating the board, the Controller, Nigeria Correctional Services, Oyo State Command, Sunday Ogundipe, said the initiative was that of the Comptroller-General of Nigerian Correctional Service to decongest correctional centres across the nation.
Ogundipe urged the committee to justify the confidence reposed in them by being honest and fair in the discharge of their duty.
In her speech, the chairman of the board assured that the board would carry out its duties in fulfilment of its mandate.
Esan said that no doubt the increasing number of inmates in Nigerian Correctional centres had been a major concern to various authorities of government and stakeholders.
She said that various measures had been put in place to decongest correctional centres.
She said that the recent introduction of Parole would also consider some other options to decongest correctional centres.
Esan said that members of the board would live up to their responsibility.
Esan, who also doubles as the Chairman, Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA), solicited for cooperation of relevant stakeholders in achieving the committee’s mandate.
Other members of the board were, Officer in Charge of Legal Department, Nigeria Police, Oyo State Command, Mrs Funke Fawole; Mr Okeniyi Olayemi, Department of Public Prosecution (DPP); and a Psychologist, Dr Gboyega Abikoye, amongst others.
