Relationship experts are urging young people to pay closer attention to warning signs that may indicate emotional manipulation, unhealthy control or even potential abuse in romantic relationships.

While disagreements and personality differences are normal, specialists say certain patterns of behaviour—especially when repeated—can signal deeper problems that should not be ignored.

One major red flag is excessive control. This can show up in subtle or obvious ways, such as a partner constantly dictating what you wear, how you behave, or what you post on social media.

Experts warn that this kind of behaviour is not about love or protection, but about dominance. Healthy relationships are built on mutual respect, not control.

Another warning sign is when a partner insists on always knowing your whereabouts. While checking in occasionally can be caring, constant surveillance—demanding updates, questioning who you are with, or becoming suspicious without reason—may signal distrust and possessiveness.

Professionals say this behaviour often stems from insecurity but can escalate into isolation and emotional pressure.

An unpredictable pattern of affection is also a cause for concern. A partner who is loving and attentive one day but distant or withdrawn the next can create confusion and emotional instability.

This “hot-and-cold” dynamic can make someone feel anxious and constantly seeking approval, which experts say may be a form of emotional manipulation.

Frequent anger outbursts are another major warning sign. While everyone experiences anger, an inability to manage it—especially when it leads to threats, intimidation or physical harm—is dangerous.

Secrecy and Dishonesty

Persistent lying, hiding phones, refusing to share basic information about plans, or giving half-truths can also undermine trust. Transparency and honesty are considered essential pillars of a stable relationship.
