Flooding in Austria has begun to recede slightly, but local authorities warn that the situation remains tense in certain areas.

Governor of Lower Austria, Johanna Mikl-Leitner, stated on Tuesday that the threat of dam breaches and landslides persists, and many people are still without electricity.

She urged residents to remain cautious and vigilant.

On Monday alone, dams broke in 21 places in the eastern state, resulting in extensive cleanup efforts that are expected to last weeks or even months.

The full extent of the damage is yet to be determined.

In Lower Austria, 271 roads remain closed due to flooding, and 26 communities are isolated.

Residents of some villages were evacuated on Monday night.

Approximately 33,000 emergency service workers were deployed during the four days of continuous rainfall.

On Monday, the authorities’ radio network received 626,000 calls, highlighting the significant communication challenges.

The death toll from the floods has risen to four, with the cause of death for the fourth victim, whose body was found in the water, still under investigation.

The amount of rainfall in eastern Austria during the past few days was four to six times the average for the entire month of September.
