Gunmen kill lecturer, student at Lagos College of Education

Gunmen suspected to be cultists have killed a lecturer and a student at the Michael Otedola College of Primary Health Education (MOCPED) Epe, Lagos State.

According to Daily Trust, the lecturer was killed around Poka town in Epe, while the student was shot dead on campus.

The lecturer was identified as Ahmed Saheed and the student as Rasak Bakare.

A police source said both incidents, which he described as unfortunate, occurred within 48 hours intervals.

A security guard in the institution, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident.

“The student was killed on campus on Wednesday and the lecturer was shot dead on Friday. We have informed the police,” he said.

However, Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, said the command was only aware of the student’s murder, explaining that it was a clash between rival cult groups.

“It was a case of rival cult groups. They chased the student and he ran into a church where they killed him. I do not have any information on the lecturer,” said Odumosu.

Oba Babatunde Ogunlaja, the traditional ruler of the community expressed sadness over the incidents.

He said the peaceful nature of Noforija town had been shattered by the unfortunate killings and therefore, called on the management of the institution to install Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras within and around the school premises.

Ogunlaja also appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, to deploy more security personnel in the community.

He asked the Lagos State Government to reconstruct the collapsed fence of the institution.

The Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, also condemned the incidents and urged law enforcement agencies to fish out the perpetrators.

He pledged that the traditional institution would ensure that all efforts were taken to prevent such from happening again in the community.
