Lagos warns of traffic disruption as Kara Bridge repairs begin on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
The Lagos State Government has alerted motorists to expect partial traffic disruption around the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as repair works on the bridge’s expansion joint commence on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
The advisory was contained in a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, which disclosed that the rehabilitation will be carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works over a two-week period.
According to the ministry, the ongoing repairs will necessitate the temporary reduction of the existing four-lane carriageway to two lanes along a 1.5-kilometre stretch of the bridge to create a safe working environment for engineers.
The ministry explained that the lane restriction could result in moderate traffic congestion, particularly around the Fatgbems Turn, as some motorists may make U-turns or seek alternative routes to avoid delays.
“To facilitate the repair works, the existing four-lane carriageway will be temporarily reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to provide a safe work zone,” the statement said.

Despite the anticipated disruption, the government assured commuters travelling towards Ibadan beyond the Fatgbems Turn that traffic is expected to flow with little or no significant delay throughout the duration of the project.
Motorists were urged to plan their journeys ahead of time, explore alternative routes where feasible, comply with traffic regulations, and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed along the corridor to ensure smooth vehicular movement.
The state government appealed for patience and understanding from road users, stressing that the rehabilitation is designed to enhance the safety, reliability, and longevity of the Kara Bridge for the benefit of all commuters.
