In recent days, reports have circulated suggesting that adulterated fuel is being supplied to filling stations, leading to engine damage and increased emissions. These allegations have sparked concerns among motorists and stakeholders in the petroleum industry. However, NNPCL, in an official statement, assured Nigerians that all imported and locally refined petroleum products undergo rigorous quality control checks before being released into the market. The company reaffirmed its commitment to upholding global best practices in fuel sourcing, refining, and distribution.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Mele Kyari, categorically dismissed the allegations, stating that there is no factual basis for the claims. He reiterated that NNPCL works in close collaboration with regulatory agencies such as the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to ensure that only products meeting approved specifications are distributed nationwide. He urged consumers to disregard the false narratives and warned against the deliberate spread of misinformation that could disrupt economic activities and erode public confidence in the energy sector.

Legal experts have weighed in on NNPCL’s threat of litigation, noting that the company has a strong case if it can prove reputational damage arising from the allegations. Some analysts believe that taking legal action against those spreading false claims would serve as a deterrent against baseless accusations in the future. Others have advised that NNPCL should intensify public awareness campaigns to educate Nigerians on the stringent quality assurance processes in the petroleum supply chain.
