Police Sergeant kills farmer at Lekki Gardens phase 4 scheme

Shock, bewilderment enveloped Lekki Gardens estate, Phase 4 scheme on Tuesday morning as an unnamed farmer was shot dead by a Mobile police man about 4am.

The police sergeant attached to the estate, was whisked to Ajiwe Police station, Ajah while the corpse of the farmer was also taken to the morgue.

A staffer of Lekki Gardens identified as Kunle told National Daily that the mobile police man shot the man twice on his leg and stomach.

It was gathered that the man of Yoruba extraction had gone into the nearby bush to hunt for snails when he was stopped by the police sergeant.

Our correspondent learnt that the man stopped and told the policeman that he was hunting for snails. Not satisfied with his explanation, the police immediately shot his leg claiming he was a thief.

In his pool of blood, the man was said to have insisted that he only came out to hunt for snails considering that it rained early Tuesday morning which usually would have been a bumper harvest for him.

The unnamed policeman was said to have got angrier as the farmer explained. He claimed the man was economical with the truth and shot him a second time on his stomach and the man died on the spot.

A source disclosed that the deceased man lived in a shanty house behind Lekki Gardens Phase 4 by General Paint bus stop, along Ajah-Epe expressway.

When our correspondent rushed to the place, the wife of the man with his two kids were seen wailing and been led away by policemen to the police station.

A phone call put across to the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Olarinde Famous-Cole was not answered but later responded with a text message: “I’m busy at the moment. Please, text me,” he wrote.

However, a text message sent to him was not responded to as at press time.
