Rumpus in Osogbo as police hit, shoot truck driver dead
Some officers of the Osun police command have killed a truck driver in Osogbo, setting off an unrest at the Ota Efun area of the state capital.
The incident happened Friday.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of Shekeena Global Borehole Drilling was brutalized before he was shot dead.
His drilling truck broke down along Ikirun way around 10:30am, and he and his team were trying to fix the problem as they obstructed traffic.
A busload of police officers arrived there, and one of them struck the driver with a shovel the officer retrieved from under the truck, and then shot him in the chest.
As neighbours watched and went wild in anger, setting up bonfires, the police officers took off their uniforms and ran away. More officers were later dispatched there to quell the riot with shooting of teargas. They also carried the corpse.
The chairman of the NURTW Oroki park Osogbo, Adewale Kareem (Asiri Eniba) later arrived to pacify the angry protesters and encourage them to open the blocked road.
