The attack on police stations and personnel which had gone down since the arrest of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, by the Nigerian government has resumed in the southeast following the sit-at-home order by the IPOB on Monday. The temporary cessation of attacks on police installations in the southeast after the arrest of Kanu generated suspicion of sabotage by the Nigerian government which southeast stakeholders purported could have a link to the attacks to blackmail southeast agitators.

In the resumed violence, four police officers were feared dead in an attack by gunmen on the Police Area Command, Nnewi, Anambra State, on Monday.

Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were accused of carrying out the attack on Monday.

The Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) of the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, was gathered to have acknowledged the attack, noting that the police confronted the attackers and thereafter, chased them away.

The Police Area Command was said to have reinforced to confront the gunmen in a fierce exchange of gunfire on Monday afternoon for about one hour to prevent them from causing more damage.

The gunmen were said to have arrived the command for the attack in about seven vehicles.

IPOB had ordered residents of the five states of the southeast to go on a sit-at-home solidarity protest over the detention of Nnamdi Kanu on Monday. Several units of security operatives were deployed to the southeast on Monday to provide security for law abiding citizens who may want to go out for their daily businesses.

Some members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) were said to be arrested by the police on Monday for attempting to enforce the stay-at-home order in Imo State and other states in the southeast.
