Decision to scrap Maritime Varsity waste of public funds – Okowa

‎Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa has advised the Federal Government to rescind the decision to scrap the Federal University of Marine Technology, Okerenkoko Warri, South-West Local Government Council of Delta State.

The governor said the decision would mean a loss of the huge resources already spent by the Federal Government, while arguing that the country stands to benefit if such specialised institutions exist.

Fielding questions from top journalists in Asaba this morning, Okowa said: “I believe that Nigerians need more numbers of such specialized Institutions than the only one they are trying to scrap. Already the governing council of the university is in place and the government has invested so much and to decide to scrap same will be a huge loss”.

The governor explained that moved by the desire to add value to technical education and ensure that people with education has the right technical skill, the State has started a process of reconstructing all technical schools in Delta State.

Dr. Okowa who was speaking at an interactive section with senior journalist in Delta State said “already work has been completed at the Technical Schools at Sapele, Ofagbe and Agbor while work will soon commence on the other set of technical schools within the state.

The Governor who spoke on various issues concerning the governance of Delta State said his administration in its attempt to be people and result oriented has decided to look at all issues on merit and not on sectional basis.

Speaking on the present state of Asaba Airport, the Governor said that the state government is seriously tackling the issues of the run way and the perimeter fencing that contributed greatly to the degrading of the Asaba Airport by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) adding he said already work has commenced on the six meter run way and our intention is to ensure that it meets its original plan of being a cargo airport to serve its critical areas of needs.

On the on going Okpanam dualization and channelization projects, governor Okowa said “over N500Million has been paid so far to the contractors to ensure rapid construction work”.

The Governor maintained that the Supreme Court victory is for all deltans and called on his opponents in the election to join hands with him to move Delta State forward.

“Delta state belongs to all of us, so we must put sectional politics aside and contribute our quota positively to the socio-economic transformation of our dear state.
