2019: Shekarau in dilemma of defection from PDP to APC
One of the presidential aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ibrahim Shekarau, a former Governor of Kano State, has been thrown into the dilemma of either to stay back in the PDP or to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. Shekarau is oscillating between potent push and pull political forces that confine him to difficulty in decision making.
Shekarau’s Media Aide, Sule Ya’u, had on Monday declared the defection of his principal PDP to the APC; citing the dissolution of Kano PDP State Executive and appointment of a Caretaker Committee led by Rabiu Bichi, former Secretary to Kano State Government and a loyalist of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, a PDP presidential aspirant as the push factor compelling Shekarau to dump the PDP for APC.
However, Shekarau stated that consultations with PDP leaders and his supporters are in progress and until concluded before makes his final decision. However, power sharing could provide balance of power between the Shekarau and Kwankwaso power blocs in Kano PDP.
On the pull factor, National Daily gathered that the Kano State APC purportedly made tempting offers to Shekarau to nominate an appointee for the deputy governor of the state, and others to fill the vacancies created by the exit of Kwankwaso’s men from the APC government in the state. However, Shekarau has not been offered the leadership of the Kano APC, putting him in another dilemma of potential political misfortune he feels is pushing him out of the PDP.
Under the pressure of the indecision, Shekarau admitted he will make his position known to the public, himself, at an appropriate time.
Shekarau had declared: “People are aware with the current trend in PDP Kano State. The national leadership has announced dissolution of Kano State Executives of PDP.
“We have challenged this decision in court because it contradicts the constitution of the PDP. We are still making consultation with PDP leaders in Kano for next line of action.
“You are aware in my political history, before I take any decision, I consult my political associates. I am still making such consultation.
“I am appealing to my supporters to exercise patience. I will make my position known to public myself at an appropriate time.”
