6 Medical problems that can cause infertility in men and women

Infertility is inability to conceive even after getting intimate without protection. Infertility is a health condition that affects 1 out of 10 couples. Infertility is often caused by health conditions.

Certain medical conditions make it difficult to conceive or carry pregnancy for the expected duration of 9 months. Both female and male infertility are caused by underlying medical conditions.

Medical conditions that cause infertility are;

Female infertility

1.      Fibroid

According to research, one-third of women are likely to suffer from uterine fibroids. Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that grow in the uterus. Although, they are malignant, they cause pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Submucosal fibroid is a type of fibroid that causes infertility. It grows in the lining of the uterus, thus making embryo implantation difficult. Fibroids can be removes through simple surgery.

2.      Problems with the reproductive organs

Certain medical issues affect the reproductive organs leading to infertility. Hormonal imbalance can cause irregular ovulation which makes it difficult to conceive.

Pelvic inflammatory disease affects the fallopian tube and makes it difficult to release eggs for fertilization. Also, chromosomal issues and age can lead to problems with egg number and egg quality.

3.      Endometriosis

Endometriosis occurs when a tissue that is supposed to grow in your uterus grows outside your uterus instead. This causes the tissue to grow and bleed into your abdomen. It can be harmless in some women, however, it can cause infertility in some.

Endometriosis causes inflammation which inhibits the successful implantation of an embryo into the uterus. It can also lead to scarring and blocking of the fallopian tube. This condition can be treated through surgery. Surgery is done to remove the endometrial tissue outside the uterus.

Male infertility

1.      Unhealthy sperm

For any man to be fertile, his sperm must be healthy, functional and motile. The testicles must function properly before healthy sperm can be produced. There also needs to be the right amount of sperm in the semen. Low sperm count reduces your semen’s ability to fertilize your partners egg.

2.      Infection

Infections such as STIs can cause inflammation which interfere with the production of sperm. Most infections lead to permanent damage of the testicles, this results in infertility.

3.      Varicocele

This is a health condition causes by the swelling of the veins that drain the testicles. It is caused by insufficient flow of blood to the testicles.
