Bizarre: Bandits fleeing military fireworks in Zamfara, Katsina run into Army base in Niger
There was massive onslaught in Niger State as bandits fleeing hot zone of military operations in Zamfara and Katsina states ran into another military hot zone in Niger State while they were seeking hideout for safety.
The fleeing bandits from Zamfara and Katsina forests ran into another military base in Maganda community adjacent Allawa in Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State.
The bandits fleeing in their hundreds through the dangerous Allawa Forest burst out to be welcomed by the Army at a military camp in Alawa. The fleeing bandits were said to have confronted the soldiers in gun battle for several hours to overrun them but failed and rather became prey to the Army who were on red alert.
The bandits were believed to have killed one soldier in the exchange of fireworks.
Majority of the bandits were killed by the soldiers; some others were said to have escaped into the jungle with bullet wounds.
The soldiers were gathered to be in pursuit of the bandits that escaped with serous bullet wounds, combing the entire forest.
Items recovered from the bandits were identified to include six machine guns and several AK-47 rifles, as well as bags of ammunition.
The Alawa Military Base was attacked in April by bandits. Five soldiers and one mobile policeman were said to be killed in the attack.
The bandits had attacked the military base at about 3.00am when the soldiers were said to have just returned from an area patrol; they burnt the military camp in the operation.
