Lagos Assembly confirms Ambode’s LASIEC nominees

Lagos State House of Assembly has confirmed the nominees into the board of Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

During screening, Professor Tunde Babawale Gabriel and Dr. Noah Olanrewaju Lawal Jinadu were cross-examined on how they will use their experiences to work effectively in the LASEIC.

The Speaker of the House, Right Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, thereafter, directed the Acting Clerk of the House, Mr. Azeez Sanni, to forward a letter notifying the governor on the confirmation of the nominees.

Governor Ambode had sent a letter to the House of Assembly seeking the confirmation of the two nominees.

In another development, a bill for a law to establish the Lagos State College of Nursing (School of Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health Nursing) and other connected matters scaled through second reading.

Speaking on the importance of the bill, Chairman, House Committee on Health, Hon. Segun Olulade, said the bill would facilitate the accreditation of the college and provide manpower to train nurses, midwives, public health officers and also regulate the establishment of institutional structure.

Olulade also stated that a section of the bill which is the objectives of the college will provide for the courses, structures, training and other facilities in health-related matters.

However, Hon. Desmond Elliot reiterated that the institution be open to all students of medicine as well as those interested in health-related courses once the institution is accredited. He also urged the House to urgently review the Lagos State Council of Nursing law 2015 in order not to give room for conflict with relevant existing law, but rather harmonize beneficial areas of the law.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, committed the bill to the Committee on Health for further actions.
