Messi suffers 13th major final defeat as Spain end Argentina’s World Cup title defence
Lionel Messi’s illustrious career added another painful chapter on Sunday after Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, marking the 13th major final defeat of the football icon’s career.
The defeat at MetLife Stadium ended Argentina’s hopes of retaining the World Cup and denied Messi a second consecutive world title as captain of the Albiceleste.
Spain secured victory in extra time after Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, following a disciplined defensive display that frustrated the defending champions throughout the contest.
Argentina’s task became even more difficult late in normal time when midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, forcing Lionel Scaloni’s side to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.
Despite a determined defensive effort, Argentina eventually conceded the winner in extra time, leaving Messi visibly emotional as the final whistle confirmed Spain as the new world champions.
The loss was Messi’s fifth defeat in a major international final with Argentina. His previous final losses came in the 2007 Copa América against Brazil, the 2014 FIFA World Cup against Germany, and the 2015 and 2016 Copa América finals, both of which ended in penalty shootout defeats to Chile.
At club level, the 39-year-old has also experienced heartbreak in several finals during his career with Barcelona, including defeats in the Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
Despite those setbacks, Messi remains one of the most decorated footballers in history. His honours include the 2022 FIFA World Cup, two Copa América titles, multiple UEFA Champions League trophies, numerous domestic league titles and a record eight Ballon d’Or awards.
The latest defeat has reignited discussion about Messi’s future with the Argentina national team, with uncertainty surrounding whether the 2026 World Cup final was his last appearance in the country’s colours.
Although the defeat adds to the list of final losses in his career, football observers note that it also reflects Messi’s remarkable consistency in leading both club and country to the biggest stages of the game over more than two decades.
