Spain overtake Argentina to become world No. 1 in latest FIFA rankings, Nigeria remain 26th

Spain have climbed to the top of the FIFA Men’s World Rankings following their triumph at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending Argentina’s reign as the world’s highest-ranked national team.

The latest rankings released by FIFA reflect the outcome of the World Cup in North America, where Spain defeated defending champions Argentina in the final after extra time to claim the global title.

Spain earned a significant boost in ranking points during their successful World Cup campaign, moving to the summit with 1,995.88 points. Luis de la Fuente’s side secured the title thanks to Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner in the final against Argentina at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Argentina dropped to second place with 1,970.37 points after failing to defend the title they won in 2022. Despite reaching the final, Lionel Scaloni’s side surrendered the No. 1 ranking they had held before the tournament.

France retained third place in the rankings despite finishing fourth at the World Cup, while England remained fourth after defeating France in the third-place play-off. Brazil completed the top five, moving up one position.

Morocco continued to strengthen their position as Africa’s highest-ranked team, climbing to sixth in the world after another impressive World Cup campaign. Portugal dropped to seventh, while Belgium, the Netherlands and Mexico completed the top 10.

Nigeria maintained their position as the world’s 26th-ranked team despite missing out on the World Cup. However, the Super Eagles slipped from third to fourth in Africa after Egypt moved ahead following its run to the Round of 16.

Morocco remain the continent’s highest-ranked nation, followed by Senegal in second place. Egypt now occupy third in Africa, with Nigeria fourth and Algeria completing the continent’s top five.

The latest rankings will be used for future international fixtures and tournament seedings. FIFA said the next official update to the Men’s World Rankings is scheduled for October 7, 2026.
