A Nigerian socialite, Elena Jessica, has reportedly died following severe complications linked to a cosmetic surgery procedure popularly known as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL).

Her death was announced by her sister, Nelli, in an emotional post shared on TikTok, where she revealed that Jessica had undergone the procedure shortly before her condition deteriorated.

According to Nelli, the surgery was carried out at Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Hospital. She alleged that the use of unsterilised surgical instruments during the operation contributed to the complications that eventually led to her sister’s death.

The incident has sparked concern on social media, with many Nigerians calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the procedure and the safety standards at cosmetic surgery facilities in the country.

In the TikTok video, Nelli expressed grief and anger over the loss, claiming that negligence at the facility may have played a role in the tragic outcome. She accused the hospital of failing to maintain proper hygiene standards during the surgery.

However, the claims have not yet been independently verified, and the management of the hospital has not publicly responded to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.

Authorities are expected to look into the matter if a formal complaint is lodged with relevant regulatory bodies.

The Brazilian Butt Lift, commonly known as BBL, is a cosmetic procedure that involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to enhance the size and shape of the buttocks. While the surgery has grown increasingly popular worldwide, medical experts warn that it carries significant health risks if not properly performed.

Health professionals have repeatedly emphasised the importance of ensuring that such procedures are carried out by qualified surgeons in accredited medical facilities that adhere to strict safety standards.

Medical experts say the case highlights growing concerns about the regulation of cosmetic surgery clinics in Nigeria.

A Lagos-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Tunde Akinola, noted that while cosmetic procedures can be safe when performed under proper conditions, unregulated clinics and poorly trained practitioners pose serious risks.

He said complications from procedures like BBL can include infections, blood clots, and fat embolism, stressing that strict adherence to sterile surgical protocols is critical.

Public health advocates are now urging regulatory authorities to intensify oversight of aesthetic clinics to prevent similar tragedies.

The death of Elena Jessica has since triggered an outpouring of condolences online, with friends, followers, and social media users mourning the loss while raising questions about patient safety in the country’s rapidly expanding cosmetic surgery industry.
