Aguiyi-Ironsi family to hold 60th memorial anniversary

The family of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, the late Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, has announced plans to commemorate the 60th anniversary of his death with a series of memorial events in Umuahia, Abia State.

The commemorative activities will begin on Wednesday, July 29, with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Tomb in Umuahia. The programme will continue on Sunday, August 2, with a memorial Mass for his late wife, Lady Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Afara-Ukwu, Umuahia.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is expected to attend the events alongside members of the Aguiyi-Ironsi family, government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other dignitaries.

In a statement issued on behalf of the family, Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi described the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on the life, leadership, and contributions of the late military leader to Nigeria.

“The anniversary provides an opportunity for the nation to honour the memory, leadership, and sacrifices of a distinguished Nigerian patriot whose contributions to national unity and development remain enduring,” he said.

Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi became Nigeria’s first military Head of State in January 1966 following the country’s first military coup. His administration lasted about six months before he was overthrown and assassinated during the counter-coup of July 29, 1966.

He was killed alongside the then Military Governor of the Western Region, Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, in Ibadan, an event that marked a turning point in Nigeria’s political history and preceded the country’s civil war.

Six decades after his death, Aguiyi-Ironsi remains a significant figure in Nigeria’s post-independence history. His family said the memorial would not only honour his legacy but also serve as a reminder of the importance of national unity, peace, and reconciliation.
