Arsenal turned the Emirates into a theatre of celebration on Saturday as they thrashed Leeds United 5–0, unveiling £60 million signing Eberechi Eze before kick-off and watching new striker Viktor Gyökeres open his account with a brace.

Eze, wearing an Arsenal shirt and jeans, strolled onto the pitch before the match to a rapturous reception from fans in north London. Sporting Director Andrea Berta described the England international as “a creative and explosive talent with huge technical quality,” as the Gunners marked the occasion with a commanding performance on the pitch.

Jurrien Timber set the tone with a powerful header from a Declan Rice corner and later turned provider for Bukayo Saka, who smashed in the second goal just before half-time. The England winger’s joy was short-lived as he was forced to limp off injured in the second half. Captain Martin Ødegaard also left the field early on his 200th appearance for the club, adding to Mikel Arteta’s injury concerns.

Arsenal’s momentum, however, never faltered. Gyökeres, a £64 million summer signing, opened his account by jinking into the box and finishing with a low strike to make it 3–0. Timber added his second of the night with another effort from a set piece before Gyökeres struck again from the penalty spot in stoppage time after teenage debutant Max Dowman was brought down.

Dowman, introduced as a substitute for fellow new arrival Noni Madueke, became the second-youngest player in Arsenal’s history at 15 years and 234 days, only behind Ethan Nwaneri who made his debut at 15 years and 181 days in 2022. His cameo drew huge cheers from the crowd as he immediately impacted the game by winning the late penalty.

Despite the emphatic victory, Arteta admitted he was concerned about the injuries to two of his most influential players. “It was a fantastic performance, but losing important players to injury is always worrying,” the Arsenal manager said.

The result extended Arsenal’s unbeaten start to the season and underlined their attacking depth, with Eze’s unveiling and Gyökeres’s goals combining to signal a statement of intent. The Emirates roared in approval as the Gunners ended the night with five goals, a clean sheet, and a glimpse of the future.
