Barcelona have recently appointed their former midfield maestro and legend Xavi Hernandez as manager following the sack of ex-boss Ronald Koeman after the Catalan giants won just four of their 12 league games under the Dutchman.

Expectedly, it is understood that the 41-year-old will look to bolster his squad and recent report prior to his advent as Barca boss has suggested that the Camp Nou club are targeting Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.

Van de Beek became a target for Barcelona while at Ajax

Meanwhile, report reaching National Daily now reveals that Xavi has decided to pull the plug on the club’s intended pursuit of the 24-year-old midfielder.

National Daily understands that Van de Beek who flourished at Ajax before joining the Red Devils in the summer of 2020 was noticed by Barcelona then and it is further believed that the La Liga giants have kept a close tab on the Amersfoort born midfielder and had even contacted his agent before his eventual move to Old Trafford.

Van de Beek who scored the last United’s goal under ex-boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have understandably fancied a move away from Old Trafford considering his limited playing times under the Norwegian.

However, National Daily gathered from the claim by the Spanish outlet Marca that Xavi has decided to ask Barcelona chiefs to end their interest in the midfielder as he does not need more midfielders and instead wants to bolster his attacking and defensive options.

Van de Beek meanwhile who had recently missed out on the international space will hope to get the opportunity to revive his career with the appointment of a new manager at United eventually.
