Editors Slam Governor Bago Over Closure of Badeggi Radio, Nigerian Guild of Editors calls shutdown “an attack on press freedom and democracy”
The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has issued a strong condemnation of Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago following his controversial decision to shut down Badeggi Radio Station. The Guild described the move as a dangerous violation of press freedom and a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
In a press statement released on Saturday, the NGE said the closure was unconstitutional and a stark reminder of Nigeria’s authoritarian past.
“This act of censorship and intimidation undermines the fundamental principles of a democratic society, where a free press is essential for holding those in power accountable,” the Guild said.
“Outside His Powers” — NGE Criticizes Executive Overreach
The Guild stated unequivocally that Governor Bago acted beyond his legal authority. It stressed that only the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and not any state governor has the statutory mandate to sanction or close broadcast stations, and only after a due investigative process.
“Governor Bago acted outside his powers. The arbitrary sealing off of a media house is unacceptable and reminds us of the dark days of military rule, which ended 26 years ago,” the Editors warned.
Constitutional and International Violations
Referencing Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the Guild emphasized that Nigeria is legally bound to uphold freedom of expression and press freedom.
The closure of Badeggi Radio — a station considered vital for public engagement and community discourse is seen as part of a broader trend of shrinking civic space.
Federal Government Urged to Intervene
While commending the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mallam Mohammed Idris, for acknowledging the irregularity, the NGE stressed that more decisive action is needed.
“This should go beyond observing the anomaly. The federal government should order the unsealing of the premises of the radio station while an investigation is carried out.”
Call for Ethical Journalism and Democratic Conduct
The NGE urged journalists to uphold the highest standards of professional conduct, while insisting that such alleged infractions must be investigated fairly not used as justification for political censorship.
“Allegations of incitement are serious and must be investigated but not used as a pretext for silencing the media,” the Guild said.
Conclusion: Free Press is Non-Negotiable
The statement closed with a strong message to public officials across the country:
“Government officials must recognize that we are in a democracy. Actions such as this represent a direct threat to democratic values. A free and independent press is essential to a functioning democracy and must be respected at all levels.”
