Edo governorship tribunal reserves judgment in PDP’s petition against Okpebholo’s victory
The Edo State Governorship Election Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, has reserved judgment in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Mr. Asue Ighodalo, challenging the declaration of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election.
The PDP and Ighodalo have alleged widespread irregularities in the electoral process and are contesting the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to declare Okpebholo victorious.
The petitioners claim that electoral malpractices, voter suppression, and result manipulation marred the election, thereby calling for either a nullification of the result or a declaration in their favor.
The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, reserved judgment on the matter on Monday after the legal representatives of both parties adopted their final written addresses.
Justice Kpochi stated that the tribunal would communicate the date for the final judgment through its secretary in due course.
Legal analysts say the tribunal’s decision will be critical in shaping the political landscape of Edo State, as it could affirm the election results, order a rerun, or rule in favor of the petitioners.
Political observers and stakeholders are keenly watching the outcome, given its potential impact on governance and party dominance in the state.
With tensions high among party supporters, the tribunal’s judgment is expected to be pivotal in determining the legitimacy of the governorship election and could set a precedent for future electoral disputes in Nigeria.
