The Federal Ministry of Water Resources, says it has constructed and upgraded 83 water facilities in Bauchi State, to enhance to access to safe drinking water at the grassroots.
Alhaji Sulaiman Adamu, Minister of Water Resources, disclosed this at the end of the training of 100 members of the Water Sanitation and Hygiene Committees (WASHCOM), on Friday in Bauchi.
Adamu, represented by Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, Director, Technical Support Services Department of the Ministry, said the projects were executed at Dambam, Darazo and Itas-Gadau Local Government Areas of the state.
He said the projects were designed to enhance access to safe and clean drinking water to about 90,000 people in the benefiting communities.
The projects, he said, was being implemented under the Partnership for Expanded Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (PEWASH).
According to him, the training exercise is to expose the participants to the best maintainance practices of water facilities at the grassroots.
He said the training was facilitated by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Bauchi State Rural Water Supply Agency (RUWASA).
Adamu urged the committees to take full control of the management of water facilities as well as provide a sustainable mechanism for fund raising in addressing challenges that might arise.
Earlier, Malam Bala Abdullahi, the Spokesman of RUWASA, decried indiscriminate vandalisation of the solar powered panel at some of the water facilities in Darazo.
Abdullahi urged the community leaders to protect water and other facilities provided by the government in their respective communities.
“The government invested huge sum of money to put these facilities in place.
“Regretably; these facilities are vandalised uncheck in the community. You must make sure to replace the stolen tap,” he said.
In his remark, Malam Abubakar Mohammed, the Chairman of the WASHCOM, Wahu Ward of Darazo LGC, lauded the gesture, saying it would enhance water supply and protect the people against waterborne diseases.
He called for the expansion of the programme to mobilise participation and deal with water scarcity in rural communities in the state.
