A multiple-vehicle collision involving a truck carrying cooking gas cylinders has triggered an emergency traffic shutdown on Ibrahim Taiwo Road in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The crash occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, near the Stadium Complex Gate, according to the Kwara State Fire Service.

The collision involved a pickup truck loaded with 50kg cooking gas cylinders, a Lexus car, a Siena bus and a commercial tricycle. The gas-carrying truck overturned during the crash, with cylinders and other inflammable materials spilling onto the road.

The Kwara State Fire Service subsequently advised motorists to avoid the affected section of Ibrahim Taiwo Road because of the potential danger posed by the spilled petroleum and the presence of the gas cylinders.

Motorists travelling from Baboko, Surulere, Adewole and adjoining areas were specifically advised to use alternative routes until the scene is cleared and declared safe.

The agency said its personnel had been deployed to the scene to contain the situation and prevent further danger.

Its Public Relations Officer, Hassan Adekunle, warned that the highly inflammable materials at the scene posed a potential safety risk to motorists, pedestrians and other road users.

Emergency personnel were seen securing the area around the overturned truck and the gas cylinders while efforts were made to manage the spilled materials.

The fire service also urged motorists using the opposite side of the road to slow down and comply with instructions from emergency personnel.

Members of the public were advised to stay away from the crash scene and avoid unnecessary gatherings that could obstruct emergency operations or expose them to additional risks.

The agency said a further update would be issued after the affected area had been cleared and confirmed safe for normal traffic.

As of the latest report, there was no official confirmation of fatalities from the incident, while emergency authorities continued efforts to secure the area and prevent a further escalation.
