Ghana considers Godswill Akpabio Stadium for AFCON qualifiers
“The Ghana Football Association is actively seeking new venues for the Black Stars following CAF’s dismissal of the Baba Yara Stadium. With urgent instructions from the Sports Ministry to secure approval for the Accra and University of Ghana Stadiums,
The Black Stars of Ghana might use the Godswill Akpabio Stadium as their temporary home ground for the remaining 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
This follows CAF’s rejection of their current venue, the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, due to major issues such as poor drainage and uneven playing surfaces.
Reports suggest the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is exploring new venues for the national team’s matches.
While the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Nigeria has been used by local clubs for CAF competitions, the Ghanaian Sports Ministry has now instructed the GFA to seek CAF approval for the Accra Sports Stadium and the newly-built University of Ghana Stadium.
Both venues need inspection to meet CAF’s Category 3 standards, as previous assessments of the Cape Coast and Accra Sports Stadiums found them inadequate.

In the meantime, CAF has asked Ghana to find an alternative venue outside the country for upcoming matches.
The Godswill Akpabio Stadium is one of several options under consideration, alongside Côte d’Ivoire’s Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Stade de la Paix, Cameroon’s Japoma Stadium, and Morocco’s Berkane Municipal Stadium.
A decision from the GFA is expected soon.
