Ifeanyi Okowa hints at defection, teases new political path
Former Governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has stirred political speculation with the announcement of his decision to embark on a “new path,” signaling a likely defection from his current political party to another platform.
In a statement addressed to his constituents on Wednesday, Okowa expressed gratitude for their continued support and trust, affirming that he remains committed to pursuing a course that aligns with the aspirations and welfare of the people.
However, he stopped short of revealing the political party he plans to join or the specific direction his political journey will take.
“I am embarking on a new path,” Okowa declared. “In due time, I will make public the details of this journey. I assure you that I will not move in the wrong direction.”
The former governor’s cryptic message has sparked a flurry of speculation within Delta State’s political circles and beyond, with many interpreting it as a prelude to his formal defection ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
His statement comes amid heightened realignments and internal tensions within Nigeria’s major political parties, as key political figures reposition themselves for future contests.

Okowa, who served as the Governor of Delta State from 2015 to 2023, was also the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 general elections, running alongside Atiku Abubakar.
Following the party’s loss in the presidential race and subsequent internal wrangling, Okowa has maintained a relatively low profile, fueling speculation about his next political move.
Sources close to the former governor suggest that consultations have been ongoing with various political groups and national figures, but no formal declaration has been made yet.
Should Okowa decide to formally defect, it could significantly alter the political landscape in Delta State and the wider South-South region, where he retains a strong network of loyalists.
His potential move is seen as part of broader political recalibrations among key figures positioning themselves for influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
For now, Okowa’s constituents and political observers alike are watching closely, awaiting the next chapter in the former governor’s political career.
